Going analogue
I am back to film photography for the first time since when I was a teenager, and I am super excited!
I will be using an old analog film camera which is part of our collection and that I didn’t know it’s still properly working. This camera was lost more than 30 years ago by someone in Morocco, and F’s uncle (who was there on his honeymoon with his wife) took it home and gave it to F.
It’s called Optima 535 and it’s by Agfa, super small and it fits in a pocket, of course it has very basic features versus any digital camera, but that’s a happy change that I am welcoming with open arms. I will go testing it with a colour film in the next days shooting around Milan, and I am planning to bring it with me to Venice (which I’m visiting by end of this month) and try to shoot the city in black and white film.
I cannot wait to listen to the sound of the winding wheel again after all these years!
So, with the idea to show this old-brand-new camera I set up a very simple still life with some variations, shot impromptu at home during an overcast, grey morning.
I am very happy of this rise of interest in film photography that I am seeing lately, I remember about twenty years ago (I know, a lifetime ago) when in photography shops (that, by the way, where easily found in Milan, now they are on the rarity side) there were many long aisles dedicated to films and then almost all in a sudden all that disappeared because the keyword was going digital, digital, digital. I felt it was a shame but, you know, I blamed both progress and evolution for that. After all, the same happened with CDs in the music industry… but apparently film photography resisted just like vinyl did, and in fact both are experiencing a renaissance I am very excited about and very curious to know where it will lead.
