Last July 8th at Carroponte, Milan, Afterhours celebrated the 20th anniversary of Ballate per piccole iene. Or at least, that was the plan. Manuel Agnelli showed up without his most crucial instrument: his voice. So, in a democratic twist rarely seen at rock concerts, the audience became the lead singer. Imagine a thousand fans turned into a choir, equal parts karaoke and survival instinct. The atmosphere was bizarre, halfway between rock gig and mass karaoke, between tribute show and survival exercise.
It wasn’t my first Afterhours gig (third? fourth?), but certainly the oddest: half nostalgia, half collective rescue mission. Hard to rate a show where you’re part of the band, but let’s say it was…funny as well as unforgettable all at once. In the end, maybe that’s exactly what a 20th anniversary should be: a reminder that these songs don’t just belong to the band, they belong to us too. Even if we never signed up to be the lead singer.
